  • Getting a Custom Tattoo

If you want to get a tattoo but are looking for something a little more original and personal than a standard design from a tattoo artist’s wall, you should consider getting a custom tattoo.

Although a visit to any tattoo artist studio will reveal a huge array of designs in all sorts of shapes and sizes, sometimes only a customized design will do. There may be a message that you particularly want to convey, an image that you want to recreate, or a combination of themes that you would like to incorporate into a single design. If this is the case for you, the first step is to find a tattoo artist who can make your vision a reality.

Take the time to look at different tattoo artists’ work. All good artists will have a portfolio of their designs, so you will be able to see easily if their style is well matched to your concept. Once you have chosen one that is suited to your needs, you need to finalize your ideas. Look for inspiration in a wide range of locations. There are many excellent resources online that you may want to adapt, or perhaps there is a picture or photograph that you have seen that captures the essence of your ideal tattoo. You need to be as explicit as possible when describing your vision to your chosen tattoo artist so that they will find it as easy as possible to draw up a design for you.

A good tattoo artist will be happy to discuss what you are looking for, and will be professional enough to be able to create something that fits with your requirements from the resources that you have provided. Be prepared to compromise, however, as sometimes, the image you have in your head may not work well when put onto your skin. Perhaps the design you have envisaged is too small to work properly, or too large for the area you have chosen. It is common for the artist to suggest tweaks here or there for your design to work to its best advantage.

You may need to wait to get an appointment with the tattoo artist of your choice. Often, good artists have a waiting list that can be several days, weeks or even months. It is worth remembering, however, that if a tattoo is worth doing, it is worth doing well, and usually, the wait is well worth it for a design that will last a lifetime.
